The third plate in the series of the Twelve Days of Christmas, Three French Hens, was issued for Christmas 1972. The three hens are rendered in vivid colors against a background of soft, muted shades of blues, grays, and whites. Only an artist of the caliber and imagination of Remy Hetreau could visualize and depict, in such a charming and unusual manner, three birds that only existed in the mind of the unknown Sixteenth Century author of the beautiful carol.
